Mary Speck is an expert on Latin American politics and governance. She has lived and worked throughout the region as an analyst, reporter, and researcher. She served as executive director of the Western Hemisphere Drug Policy Commission, an independent, bipartisan entity created by Congress, from June 2019 through January 2021. She also directed the International Crisis Group’s Mexico and Central America Project, conducting research into organized crime, corruption, and security sector reform. As a journalist, she covered the Andean region for the Miami Herald and reported freelance from Central and South America. She holds a PhD in Latin American history from Stanford University.
